MAKE YOUR OWN LEATHER CARD WALLET

A hands-on day of traditional leathercraft at Finnebrogue Woods

Spend a day in the woods learning the fundamentals of leatherworking and make your own handcrafted, personalised leather card wallet to take home.

Starting with vegetable-tanned leather, you'll be guided through the whole process — from measuring and cutting the leather to dyeing, stitching and finishing your wallet.

No previous leatherworking experience is needed. You'll work alongside leatherworker and instructor Michael Barr, who will demonstrate each technique and help you through every stage of the project.

MAKE SOMETHING YOU'LL ACTUALLY USE

This isn't a demonstration where you sit back and watch.

You'll spend the day making your own leather wallet, with Michael showing you the techniques and helping you put them into practice yourself.

By the end of the day you'll have a finished leather card wallet that you've designed, made and personalised yourself.

It's a practical introduction to a traditional craft — and you'll leave with something useful to show for it.

WHAT YOU'LL MAKE

Your own leather card wallet

You'll make a compact leather card wallet from vegetable-tanned leather, choosing your own colour and adding your own personal touches.

You'll take your finished wallet home at the end of the day.

Choose your colour. Add your own stamp. Stitch it yourself. Make it yours.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

During the workshop you'll be introduced to the tools, materials and techniques used in traditional leatherworking.

You'll learn how to:

  • Select leather suitable for the project
  • Measure and mark out your leather accurately
  • Cut leather safely and accurately
  • Use leatherworking tools correctly
  • Stamp and personalise leather
  • Dye leather and build up an even finish
  • Prepare and glue leather pieces
  • Prepare edges for finishing
  • Sand and burnish leather edges
  • Mark and prepare stitching holes
  • Hand-stitch leather using traditional techniques
  • Finish and polish your completed wallet

You'll also have the opportunity to explore some additional leatherworking techniques, including rivets, press-studs and basic leather sewing machines, depending on time and interest.
